Many people have no idea that hemp has been used for textiles before, and herein lies my inspiration for this week's post.
Hemp is one of the oldest crop known to man, and has been cultivated for its fibre and medical properties since ancient times. The hemp plant contains one of the longest and strongest natural fibres, rivalling synthetic fibres such as glass fibre. In the past it was used to produce clothing and is said that Californian gold diggers jeans and levi jeans were first made from hemp. However over a period of time hemp has been rejected as a fibre crop due to its association with narcotic drug production, which prompted cultivation to be banned.
Hemp textile are both superior in quality and less ecologically damaging to produce. Despite being outlawed industrial hemp remains one of the best sources for long fibres and textiles of all kinds; its textiles is many times harder wearing than denim, yet its fabric can be every bit as soft and versatile as cotton, more water absorbent, possess elasticity and great ability to withstand high temperatures without degeneration. Plus hemp cultivation takes less heavy machinery to harvest and has to be cultivated yearly as oppose to trees which takes forty years, and provides homes for many animals.
Hemp otherwise known as Cannabis stavia is coming out of the closet as more people are being sensitize about its countless uses.
This link will take you to the actual history of the levi-jeans
Thank you all for visiting my blog. Please look out for next week's post.

ReplyDeleteI hope in Trinidad we can grow this legally, with a special strain just like the Scorpion Pepper that only grows in Moruga, which is ranked at the # 1 hottest in the entire world.
ReplyDeleteWhat an achievement # 1 ranked Cannabis Stavia.
I guess a lot of marijuana planters will like that, however the goal of this blog is not to promote the legalization of marijuana but to sensitize the public about the many benefits it possess.
DeleteNadine finally reporting with a fresh perspective... on Marijuana ....Great job!
ReplyDeleteThis blog could surely be utilized as a edifying tool for the Marijuana debate as it circles the local forefront. Cant wait to see how the blog gains momentum, keep it coming... thanks for the info.
In Amsterdam I believe they still sell hemp produced clothing. Im guessing it wouldn't be a major problem if the drug is legal. I think the real issue though is that the production of marijuana as a drug is used to fund terrorist, gang warfare and any other illicit groups because no fuss is garnered when it's cultivated for medicine. Another issue apart from the known ones are that it is not taxable product so any revenue garnered from it would yield a higher marginal income than if it was taxed.
ReplyDeletePeople learn something new everyday!! Like me i really didn't know that Marijuana had such good use. Many people will think that others use it for illegal use only... Now i can challenge my Sociology teacher to a debate... After all he knows i live Moruga or as he told me in class 'The homeland of Marijuana'! It was not something new i heard but i had no back up answer to state that Yes we're the homeland of something that bebefitted us in many ways!! Thanks much for the info!! I'll use them to the best of me and the shame of other cause after i let them know the good use of Marijuana they'll not ever want to challenge me with my knowledge lol.....
